Children of Men

Saw the trailer for Children of Men before Lady in The Water, which you should see (more on that here). The movie is based on a book written by P.D. James, a crime novel author. As you can probably tell, the story is set in a future version of our world where women no longer produce children. Faced with a slow, inevitable extinction, mankind loses hope and turns to anarchy and violence. Interestingly enough, in the novel the reason for the lack of order in society is not because everyone is enjoying some giant “the world is ending and so there is no consequences” orgy. In fact the author shows that society falls apart because people give up.

This is an point I’ve never considered. We all think of the end of the world, ending up being some big power/money/pleasure grab where everyone only cares for themselves and are trying to experience everthing they can. I think her example is more fitting. Why then do people in this life seem only to live for the moment, when they know there is no future. Doesn’t the fact that there is no future, make life more precious? It is those who have hope in life beyond this world that can truly “not care” about their present circumstances.
Watch the trailer here.
